So I'm a third year ME student in college at Cal Poly SLO. Wayy out on the west coast. But, I grew up in the midwest, and have spent a little bit of time in Tennessee. I am thinking I'd love to leave CA (I know, not many people say that, but I figure CA is a good place to come back to) after college, and to get the ball rolling, I'm trying to find an internship out of state. Sure, I've sent in applications to the likes of Pratt & Miller (Michigan), Holley (KY), and a couple of NASCAR teams (NC), but I honestly have no idea how to go about finding an internship out of state. Any advice?
Also, any thoughts on living in North Carolina, Tennessee, or any place around there? I know a few oppo-ites live out there.
For your consideration, here's a pin up girl poster I saw yesterday and now dearly want (After jump)

Well, I'm a ME student from Illinois going to school in Michigan and doing an internship in NC. So I guess I have a bit of experience in that.
It's not that bad, really. I was totally location-blind when I sent out applications, and ended up getting an offer in the Winston-Salem area. As far as housing goes, I asked the HR manager for recommendations, and ended up in an apartment that allows me to only rent for half of the year. So all told, it worked out rather well.
The moral of the story is that a lot of places like their interns. So when you have a question, ask. If you need help, ask. And they're usually happy to oblige.
Also, I'm hoping to move to a slightly more populated area sometime in the next year or so. If you end up in NC, let me know.
Out of curiosity, which NASCAR teams did you apply to?

Take a look at our intern programs. They are typically at the Air Force or NASA, but MEs work there too. The Air Force internships require capability to hold a Secret clearance, so you have to have a clean record and not use any kind of drugs, or have used them.

I sent apps in to Hendricks Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing lol. I'm pretty sure on both of their websites, they said something to the extent of "due to the enormous volume of resumes/application we recieve, don't expect to hear a reply back."
I've applied to a good amount of companies, but I guess in that vein, how would you go about finding companies to apply to/how do you know if these companies are looking for interns. I'd say of all the companies I applied to, Pratt & Miller and Edelbrock were the only ones that expressely stated that they had an internship program. Every other company I just sent an email to their HR department with my resume and a little blurb.

For government internships, you could use this site. Indeed or Monster should work for all other jobs. The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of NC would probably be a good place to look. I work in Huntsville, AL, where there are lots of NASA and DoD-related engineering jobs available. North Alabama is pretty similar to most of Tennessee. If you're looking for a job in the auto industry, I think Toyota manufactures engines in Huntsville. There are also plants in Birmingham, AL (Mercedes) and Chattanooga, TN (VW).

Have you considered Los Alamos or Sandia National Labs in NM? They do employ a vast amount of ME. Great pay, great benefits, beautiful place to live.

Colorado would be a good place to finish college, and live for a couple years. There's one NASCAR team in Denver "Furniture Row Team". They don't have the capital that a lot of the teams have, so they might appreciate engineering interns more.

Hmm I'll definitely look into them. I'm not looking to change schools, I love my school, but I want to get a foot in the door in another state for when I finish school.

Government jobs are some of the best.

Particularly the secret ones :-) We did have one intern who, I am not making this up, was working on a warp drive at NASA. I saw pictures.

Great idea. Plus Sandia will pay for Graduate school. I have contacts for Sandia recruiting.

It may not be the most exotic or exciting place, but you will want to check out OKC. Barely hit by the recession, very cheap living expenses, many job opportunities (especially engineering related; energy and aerospace are the big industries here), and many, many exciting updates coming to the city in the future. As someone who has lived in Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas, and Canada, I can say Oklahoma is the best of all, hands down. The best part is the people, and something you won't find anywhere else.
If you are looking for engineering jobs, Wichita is also a great place to live and has many opportunities in aerospace.
You'll want to get on the internship thing though if you are looking for something next summer. Some places already have the positions filled for next year and many will fill theirs in the next few weeks.

Yea I've been sending out plenty of apps and resumes. A decent amount of companies are filling positions now, but as many are accepting apps till January or February (Tesla for example accepts apps for Summer till February, so does Pratt & Miller). But yea, seeing some of my friends (admittedly not ones in engineering) getting internship offers is getting me anxious.

I wish you luck!
I do happen to also know that Stewart-Haas and Richard Childress Racing both do internships. I'd ping them.
